Sukhjanvir graduates UCD (2024)

ABOUT
Born in the Bay Area and raised in Tracy, 22-year-old singer-songwriter and producer Sukhjanvir "JJ" Grewal began her musical journey at just three years old when her family relocated in 2005. Her mother had enrolled her in piano lessons to help build-up her social skills – what ended up coming out of it? Sukhjanvir quickly discovered a deep love for music — one that would shape the rest of her life.
Almost entirely self-taught, Sukhjanvir is now a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. In 2024, she graduated from the University of California, Davis with a B.A. in Psychology and a Minor in Music. She launched her musical career performing in both Davis and Tracy — from intimate coffee shop gigs to live radio performances and even headlining a university-sponsored Pride Festival.
Her work has also been featured in a graduate-level documentary and paper highlighting global atrocities. Sonically, Sukhjanvir’s music blends dreamy textures with raw, emotional storytelling, drawing inspiration from artists like FINNEAS, Billie Eilish, Lizzy McAlpine, Noah Kahan, and Taylor Swift. Her lyrics offer a gut-wrenching honesty that speaks to universal experiences of heartache, healing, and growth.

Documentary
Sukhjanvir's music has been featured in a graduate-level documentary highlighting the atrocities of the on-going genocide in Gaza. Her song, "Oh, Boy," was written in 2023/24 upon hearing about the humanitarian crisis occurring in Palestine. Although originally written to bring awareness to the issue for a school-related assignment, she was asked to perform it for her class. Additionally, it was used in her lecturers' graduate-level documentary relating to ethnomusicology. This documentary was then screened at the first annual Lesvos Peace Film Festival. She was also asked to perform the song live at the festival. Listen to her song, "Oh, Boy," and watch the documentary by clicking on the link below:
